Emotional, psychological, and social well-being are all crucial components that make up the mental health of every human being. It influences our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Additionally, it affects how we interact with others, respond to stress and make decisions. Every stage of life, from infancy and adolescence to maturity, is vital for mental health.

People who suffer from mental health issues visibly exhibit it in their thinking, feelings, and behaviour throughout their life. There are several aspects that result in mental health issues, such as: -

  • Biological components, including DNA or the functioning of the brain
  • Experiences with trauma or abuse in life
  • History of any mental illness in the family

Mental health issues are a problematic situation that is becoming all too common globally. That is why it's difficult to argue against the necessity for mental health awareness. In fact, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 5 persons annually suffer at least one mental health problem.

Why is Mental Health important?

Unfortunately, there is often a great deal of stigma associated with anything related to mental health, which is why we should applaud good mental health initiatives and work to remove any obstacles that have been put in the way. By doing that, we can address mental health in a constructive and effective manner. Additionally, this adds a lot of significance to World Mental Health Day which is celebrated every year on 10th October.

Remember, mental illness isn't something to be ashamed of. In fact, we should encourage and support those who are suffering from mental disorders.

When a person's mental wellness is compromised, it can lead to poor decisions that jeopardise their well-being and their connections with others around them. Thus, taking care of your mental well-being is crucial to your overall health and happiness, regardless of your age.

The importance of good mental health reflects in the following traits in everyday life: -

Enhanced Resilience to the Stresses of Daily Life

If your mental and emotional health are both strong, you will find it simpler to deal with life's obstacles.

In situations where detrimental coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse, social withdrawal, temper tantrums, or physical conflict, have been adopted to deal with relationship conflicts, money problems, job difficulties, and other life issues; a steady state of mind can promote the development of more adaptive strategies.

Enhanced Productivity

Your ability to be productive takes a hit if you are dealing with depression or any other mental illness. It's highly probable that you will work more quickly and produce work of a higher standard when you feel and are mentally strong.

Positivity in Oneself

Personal feelings about oneself are strongly correlated with mental health. Your overall mental health is related to your sense of self-worth. Having confidence is frequently a sign of a sound mental condition.

Focusing on the positive side of oneself is more likely in someone whose mental health is flourishing. Such people will concentrate on these traits and generally have goals in their pursuit of a long, happy and purposeful life.

How To Take Care Of One's Mental Health?

Regular Full-Body Checkups

A healthy diet supports long-term brain health; what you ingest can have a strong impact on how you feel when it comes to your mental health. Our body stores essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and iron.

Ferritin test, vitamin D test, vitamin B-12 test, anaemia test etc. that are done during a full body check-up can help determine the amount of these nutrients present. In the absence of above stated essential vitamins or an anaemic body, cognitive & physical impairment takes place due to deficiency in formation of red blood cells. This causes lesser oxygen level that leads to mood swings, temporary mind fog, instability in energy levels to perform day-to-day functions.

Physical Exercise

It goes without saying that exercising is an excellent method to enhance one's mental and emotional well-being. Even simple activities like walking, cycling, and dancing can prominently influence mental health.

Mental Workout

Our minds require a range of exercises just like our physical muscles do to keep in form. Keeping our thoughts engaged and active can be achieved through playing games, solving riddles, and exercising our wits. Being cognizant of our mental health and well-being can go a long way in preventing mental health issues.

Stable mental health impacts everything we think, say, and do. Since it affects every phase of our life, its importance cannot be overstated. Let’s do our utmost to take care of it.
