Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

A HBsAg test result signifies that a person has been infected by the hepatitis B virus and can transmit the virus to others as well. After a positive result for the HBsAg test, a doctor may prescribe further testing to determine whether the infection is acute or chronic.

After a positive HBsAg result, further testing is prescribed to determine if a person has acute or chronic hepatitis B infection. Acute hepatitis B generally goes away by itself with plenty of fluids, rest, and proper nutrition. On the other hand, chronic hepatitis B cannot be cured and must be managed throughout one’s life.

The HBsAg blood test screens for the presence of the hepatitis B virus. Positive results of the HBsAg blood test require further testing to determine whether the patient is suffering from acute or chronic hepatitis B.

Acute hepatitis B generally goes away on its own and a patient is recommended plenty of fluids, rest, and proper nutrition while recovering. In the more severe cases, antiviral medication or hospitalisation may be required as well for effective treatment of the infection.

Chronic hepatitis B infection is not curable but can be managed with lifestyle changes and medication for treating the symptoms and for avoiding liver damage. As chronic hep B can also affect the liver, monitoring the organ’s condition regularly is also important.

Hepatitis B surface antigens are proteins that are present on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. The most accurate test for hepatitis B surface antigen is the HBsAg test, which detects the presence of the antigens as well as certain antibodies in the blood for the diagnosis of hepatitis B. While positive results of the hepatitis B surface antigen test indicate a hepatitis B infection, they cannot classify the infection as acute or chronic, for which, further testing is required.

Yes. The HBsAg rapid test is one of the most reliable confirmatory tests for detecting the presence of the hepatitis B virus. The HBsAg rapid test checks for the presence of hep B surface antigens and certain antibodies in the blood, which are only found when a person has been infected by the hepatitis B virus. The test however cannot classify whether the infection is acute or chronic.

The rapid card test for HBsAg allows for the rapid, qualitative detection of the hepatitis B surface antigen in a blood sample. Using the rapid card test for HBsAg offers a simple, quick, and easy-to-interpret procedure for detecting the hepatitis B infection using immunochromatography, where the result can be interpreted in the form of coloured lines that show up (or don’t) in the test region.

There are four stages of chronic hepatitis B, which have been explained below:

  • Immune Tolerance: Also known as the incubation stage. This is when the hepatitis B virus is replicating rapidly but has not caused too much inflammation. The infection can be detected in this stage by a HBsAg test.
  • Immune Clearance or Immune Response: In this stage, the immune system triggers an inflammatory response to destroy the hepatitis B virus in response to the damage caused to the liver by the virus. If this stage persists for more than 6 months, the infection may develop into chronic hepatitis B.
  • Immune Control or Inactive Carrier: This is when the body’s immune system is successfully able to suppress the virus and the liver functions start normalising. Complete eradication of the virus leads to the elimination of HBsAg from the blood and the development of HBsAb, which indicates the resolution of infection.
  • Immune Escape or Reactivation: This stage signifies the ‘escape’ of the virus from the immune system as it starts replicating again, despite the presence of antibodies.

For some people, the symptoms of being HBsAg positive do not even appear, while for others, symptoms may last for weeks. Ranging from mild to severe, the symptoms that may indicate the need for a HBsAg screening test include:

  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Pain in the stomach
  • Appetite loss
  • Mild fever
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Yellow tinge in the eyes of the skin
  • Brown-coloured urine

A regular HBsAg screening test can help with the early detection of the infection even when mild or no symptoms are showing.

The HBsAg test is confirmatory when it is performed to detect the presence of the hepatitis B virus. The levels of HBsAg in the blood are detectable even in the first stage of infection. However, for categorising the hepatitis B infection as acute or chronic, one would require undergoing more confirmatory tests after the HBsAg.
