Menstruation is vaginal bleeding that occurs every month among women of reproductive age. This is a natural process in which the uterine lining sheds after 28 days due to the absence of fertilisation. Also known as a period, menses, chums, etc., menstruation lasts for 5 to 7 days. There are a lot of women who have irregular periods in which they either skip one or multiple cycles of menstruation. There can be many causes of irregular periods, it is important to treat abnormal menstruation. This is because irregular menstruation can be a cause of concern for women who wish to conceive. Read on to know more about types of menstruation problems, their causes, and treatment:

Types of Abnormal Menstruation

Abnormal menstruation or irregular periods is a common problem among women with solutions available according to the issues faced by them. Here are 5 types of menstruation-related conditions that require a prolactin blood test from a reputed pathology lab:

  • Menorrhagia

When a woman experiences excessive vaginal bleeding then it is known as menorrhagia. In this condition, periods can prolong for 7 or more days with extreme bleeding or “flooding” due to hormonal imbalances. It is recommended to get a reasonably-priced prolactin test from a renowned diagnostic centre to analyse the level of hormones.

  • Dysmenorrhea

A lot of women experience cramps and extreme pain during their periods known as dysmenorrhea. This is one of the most common menstrual disorders that young girls and women face. Dysmenorrhea occurs due to the lack of proper oxygen supply in the uterus which may lead to contractions.

  • Amenorrhea

This medical condition occurs when a woman does not get her periods during a menstruation cycle. When a woman does not experience vaginal bleeding after hitting puberty then it is known as primary amenorrhea. On the other hand, secondary amenorrhea takes place when a woman does not have vaginal bleeding for three consecutive cycles. The treatment of irregular periods is recommended to be done with the help of an experienced gynaecologist.

  • Hypomenorrhea

In this type of abnormal menstruation, women may experience very light bleeding that last only for a couple of days. It is observed in women who use oral contraceptive pills or during their menopause. The levels of prolactin are not normal, so it is essential to consult a doctor who can prescribe the best treatment plan.

  • Oligomenorrhea

The infrequency of periods in women is defined as oligomenorrhea. The symptoms of irregular periods occur because of hormonal imbalance. Although some changes in the menstruation cycle are normal, if the periods are consistently irregular then it should be taken seriously.

Causes of Abnormal Menstruation

The effects of delayed periods may occur when there are some underlying health issues. It is advised to monitor the period cycle for at least a couple of months before consulting a doctor. Here are some of the most common causes of irregular periods that can be treated by a doctor:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
  • Stress and Lifestyle Issues
  • Endometriosis
  • Birth-control Pills
  • Certain Medications
  • Fibroids
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Premature ovarian insufficiency
  • Pregnancy-related Complications
  • Cervical Cancer

If there are symptoms of any of these issues, then it is suggested to consult an experienced OB/GYN. Regular tests to monitor prolactin, insulin, follicle-stimulating hormone, glucose, and other hormones can further help in resolving menstrual disorders.

Abnormal Menstruation Treatment

The diagnosis of a menstrual problem is done with a help of a pelvic exam and an ultrasound of the lower abdomen. Along with this, blood tests are prescribed to check the levels of hormones in a female’s body. In some cases, endometrial biopsy is conducted to diagnose endometriosis and hormonal imbalances. Women who might have several hormonal problems might be at a higher risk of prolactinoma, a benign tumour in the pituitary gland. The diagnosis of this medical condition can be easily done by analysing the prolactin levels

The treatment of irregular periods is done based on the signs exhibited. If a woman experiences mild symptoms, then home remedies can be enough for giving them relief. A painkiller and a heating pad can be sufficient to provide period pain. When a woman experiences extreme pain, bleeding or severe irregularity in her menstruation, then it is best to consult an OB/GYN. Medications can be prescribed to control excessive bleeding, light periods, and irregular periods. Women who have polyps or fibroids might require surgical removal.

Abnormal menstruation is a common occurrence that can be treated with the help of basic home remedies. It is only when there is an underlying medical issue that further investigation is needed.
