How to Prepare for GTT Test?

First, do not eat or drink anything except water for at least 8 hours before your test. This means no coffee, tea, soda, juice, milk, food, chewing gum, or candy. You may drink water up to 2 hours before the test. Second, if you are taking any diabetes medications, insulin, or other injectable medications please check with your physician or nurse about when to take these prior to your test as they may need to be held on the day of the test.

Lastly, after your blood is drawn for the fasting blood sugar level measurement, you will be given a cup of sugar solution to drink. The sugar solution has a concentration of 100 grams of sugar dissolved in water and tastes similar to very sweet orange juice. Please drink the entire solution within 5 minutes. You will then need to sit or recline quietly for the next hour while your blood sugar level is monitored.
