Scarlet fever is a contagious illness that is typified by its characteristic red rash and sore throat. Scarlet fever can infect anyone but is mostly prevalent among children.

Causes

Scarlet fever, or scarlatina, is mostly triggered by a bacterium infection due to group A Streptococcus. It is infamous for causing many ailments, such as strep throat.

The spread of this infection occurs by respiratory droplets whenever the person who has the infection coughs or sneezes. One who remains in close contact with the infected person increases their chances of acquiring this infection.

In some instances, contaminated surfaces or shared objects can transmit the bacteria. Children are especially vulnerable because of their immature immune systems and close living conditions in schools.

Symptoms

Scarlet fever, or scarlatina, has a distinct symptomology. Listed below are the usual symptoms of scarlet fever:

  • Very high fever, which can range up to 101°F and above
  • Throat pain
  • Typical rash that starts in the neck and face before propagating all over the body
  • Rough texture of the skin like sandpaper
  • White coat on the tongue, which afterwards peels off to expose a red surface below, usually known as "strawberry tongue"
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Prevention

Scarlet fever needs to be prevented, particularly within families with kids. Cleanliness is an important factor, so practice regular handwashing in order to limit the spread of bacteria.

Prevent close contact with the infected. If the person has been diagnosed, isolate them until they are no longer contagious. This prevents others from being exposed.

Make sure surfaces and common objects are regularly disinfected. Toys, doorknobs, and cutlery must be cleaned on a regular basis to reduce risk.

Teach children not to share personal items such as towels or toothbrushes so they can learn how infections are spread.

Treatment Options

In the treatment of scarlet fever, antibiotics are the first line of treatment. The majority of patients see improvement within a day or two of taking medication prescribed by their doctors. Apart from antibiotics, symptom management is also crucial. Painkillers available over the counter reduce fever and pain. Additionally, it is important to drink plenty of fluids since they help in recovery.

Resting from ordinary activities gives the body of the infected individual an opportunity to heal more effectively. Warm salt water gargles may also give instant relief to patients with severe pain in the throat.

Home Remedies

Home remedies can help alleviate symptoms for those suffering from scarlet fever. Although medical care is a must, some natural methods may help relieve symptoms. Some of the home remedies that people can use are:

  • Honey calms sore throats and is a natural cough suppressant. Blend it with warm water or herbal teas for an extra boost.
  • Gargling saltwater relieves irritation of the throat and can effectively minimize inflammation.
  • Maintaining hydration through the consumption of adequate fluids, including clear broths, herbal teas, and fresh juice keeps the body well-nourished.
  • Oatmeal baths are soothing on inflamed skin due to rashes that come with scarlet fever. The calming nature eases itching and discomfort.

Conclusion

Scarlet fever is an infectious disease that may infect anyone, especially children. Knowing the signs and causes of the disease will help in its early detection and treatment. Early action will prevent complications of scarlet fever such as rheumatic fever and kidney problems.
