Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

An RBC test, also known as a red blood cell count, is a simple and common blood test that measures the number of red blood cells in your bloodstream. Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body and removing carbon dioxide waste.

In general, fasting is not necessary before an RBC test. You can eat normally and take any prescribed medications as usual on the day of your appointment.

The normal range for an adult male is 4.5-5.5 million cells/microliter, while for an adult female it's 4.0-5.0 million cells/microliter.

Persistent and unexplained increases in RBC counts may indicate serious health conditions such as polycythemia vera or congenital heart disease. These conditions can affect the production of new blood cells or interfere with how oxygen gets transported around your body.

  • If you smoke cigarettes, quitting smoking can also help improve your RBC count.
  • Regular exercise can also help regulate RBC counts by increasing oxygen uptake in the body.

Here are some of the best food sources that increase RBC:

  • Spinach
  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Kale
  • Almonds
  • Cashews

There are certain foods that you should avoid or limit in your diet:

  • Red Meat
  • High Fat Dairy Products
  • Alcohol
  • Organ Meat
