Coombs Test is done to look for antibodies inside the blood. Antibodies help to keep the body healthy by fighting harmful bacteria and viruses. However, in some cases, the antibodies start to attack healthy cells. This is the reason why doctors ask for a Coombs Test to find out if the antibodies are behaving normally inside the body. Coombs Test is of two types - direct and indirect. In Coombs Direct Test, doctors observe the red blood cells to look for antibodies. If the Direct Coombs Test result is positive, that means your antibodies are attacking the red blood cells inside your body. In indirect Coombs Test, on the other hand, doctors look for antibodies attached to the red blood stream in the blood stream. Normal range for Direct Coombs Test implies that there are no antibodies attacking the red blood cells.
