APTT is a blood coagulation test that measures the time it takes to form a blood clot. The APTT test is used to get a narrow reference range of the formation of blood clots by adding an activator to speed up the clotting time. This test is a more specific version of the PTT that is used for checking the response of patients to heparin therapy.
Partial thromboplastin time and activated partial thromboplastin time are used to look at one set of clotting factors and how long it takes to form a blood clot. Normally, when a person gets an injury, some of the blood vessels are damaged. Coagulation factors are the proteins in the blood that work to stop bleeding in that area and form a blood clot. There are several clotting factors in the blood. If any of the factors is missing, broken or defective, then it takes longer than usual to form a clot. The APTT test is used to check the specific function of a coagulation factor. The APTT test's normal range is around 20–35 seconds.
