A Differential Leukocyte Count (DLC) test is a type of blood test that measures the number and types of white blood cells in your body. It determines the percentage of different types of WBCs, such as neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes.

One critical importance of measuring DLC is that it can help identify infections or diseases that affect different types of white blood cells. For example, high levels of neutrophils may indicate a bacterial infection, while high levels of lymphocytes may suggest a viral infection.

If the DLC count is high, it could mean that there is an infection or inflammation in the body. Infections such as bacterial, viral and parasitic infections can cause an increase in white blood cell production.

The parameters of this test involve counting and analyzing all five types of white blood cells present in our body. The five types of white blood cells include neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. Each type plays a unique role in protecting our body against infections or diseases.

The normal range for lymphocytes is between 20% to 40% of total DLC count. However, this value may vary depending on age and health status. Babies have higher levels of lymphocytes than adults because their immune systems are still developing.

One should not confuse TLC with DLC. While both are essential tests that form part of a complete blood count, they measure different things – Total Leukocyte Count (TLC) estimates the total number of white blood cells present while Differential Leukocyte Count (DLC) tells us how many WBCs are present for each type.
