The liver is the second-largest and one of the most important organs in the human body. The liver performs a number of important functions, like metabolising food, regulating clotting, removing toxins from the blood, helping maintain cholesterol levels, producing proteins and bile to regulate blood sugar levels, regulating hormonal balance, and much more.

There are a number of conditions, like excessive consumption of alcohol, improper diet, obesity, etc., which can lead to an accumulation of toxins, affecting the liver function as well. An accumulation of toxins deranges the metabolic activities of the body and can lead to potentially serious health issues.

Liver Disease Symptoms to Look Out For

It is important to understand that in most cases, the early signs and symptoms of liver disease are not noticeable for a long period of time and can only be detected with a liver function test. However, some of the common symptoms of liver disease include:

  • Yellowish skin and eyes
  • Dark urine
  • Pale-coloured stool
  • Abdominal pain and fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tendency to bruise easily
  • Itchy skin

Knowing how to keep your liver healthy naturally can go a long way in helping improve liver function and help one avoid serious health issues like fatty liver disease or liver failure.

How to Keep the Liver Healthy

For good liver function knowing how to maintain a healthy lifestyle is crucial. There are several lifestyle changes that can make quite a difference:

  • Avoid Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to severe liver diseases like fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, which is scarring of the liver, or liver failure if proper treatment is not offered on time.

  • Follow a Healthy Diet

A diet of high-calorie meals, saturated fats, trans fats, and hydrogenated fats can affect liver function adversely in the long run. It is always advisable to follow a healthy diet and cut off unnecessary carbs. The right diet is a crucial part of how to keep your liver healthy. You can also include foods like grapefruit, blueberries, cranberries, grapes, beetroot juice, nuts, etc., which are good for the liver, in your diet.

  • Drink Plenty of Water

Hydration is another key component of how to keep the liver healthy as it aids the liver in removing toxins from the body. Proper water intake is crucial if one wants to improve liver function. How much water a person should drink during a day would vary from person to person based on their health, body requirements, lifestyle, etc.

  • Exercise Regularly and Maintain Body Weight

Another know-how to maintain a healthy liver is by maintaining body weight in accordance with BMI. Excessive weight loss as well as weight gain can affect liver function adversely. Regular exercising or physical activities not only aid weight management but also help keep blood sugar levels under control and improve heart health.

  • Include Liver Function Tests in Your Regular Health Check-Ups

Several types of liver diseases and conditions do not cause any noticeable symptoms until the time they have progressed to later stages and a liver function test is one of the only ways to detect the presence of such issues in the initial stages. A liver function test measures the levels of different enzymes, proteins, and other substances in the blood, which are produced by the liver. Including this test in your regular full body health check-ups is a good way to ensure preventive healthcare.

  • Quit Smoking

Excessive or moderate level smoking releases toxins that can lead to liver diseases. To live a disease-free life, a person should avoid smoking, even if it is passive.

  • No Sharing of Personal Hygiene Items

Even a micro-unit of blood is enough to transmit liver diseases from one person to another. This is a very real possibility when one shares personal hygiene items like nail clippers and razors with someone who has liver disease and should be avoided.

  • Practise Safe Sex

Sexually transmitted diseases like hepatitis B and C can significantly increase the risk of developing chronic conditions if proper precautions are not taken. Following safe sex practices are very important for avoiding such situations.

  • Get Vaccinated

Hepatitis A, B, and C are viral liver infections that can deteriorate one’s health significantly. Getting vaccinated against such diseases on time can help avoid adverse situations.

It is important to know how to maintain a healthy liver and which lifestyle habits should be avoided to ensure good health.
